Kaffarah

Kaffarah, also spelled Kaffara, is a form of expiation required in Islam for certain serious violations committed knowingly and without a valid excuse. It is prescribed in the Qur’an and Sunnah and must be fulfilled correctly in order for repentance to be complete.

Kaffarah amounts

For 2026, Kaffarah obligations are calculated at $10 per meal.

Kaffarah for deliberately breaking a fast in Ramadan

• Fast 60 days consecutively, or;
• Feed 60 people with one meal each Total: AU$600

Kaffarah for breaking an oath

• Feed 10 people with one meal each
  Total: AU$100
• Clothe 10 needy people, or
• Free a slave
• If unable, fast 3 days

All meals are distributed to eligible recipients through trusted partners.

What requires Kaffarah in Islam

There are five primary situations in which Kaffarah is required:

• Deliberately breaking a fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse
• Breaking a sworn oath
• Violating sacred rites during Hajj
• Committing manslaughter, whether intentional or accidental
• Practising zihar, a pre Islamic form of marital estrangement

Each of these carries a specific expiation. In many cases, feeding those in need is a valid and prescribed method of fulfilling Kaffarah.

How Kaffarah is fulfilled

Kaffarah must be discharged exactly as outlined in Islamic law. Feeding the poor is a common and accepted form of expiation, provided it meets the required quantity and conditions.

The difference between Fidya and Kaffarah

Fidya

• For missed fasts due to valid reasons such as illness or old age
• One person fed per missed fast

Kaffarah

• For intentionally broken fasts or oaths
• Sixty people fed per broken fast
